Letters from NHS Lothian sent electronically

Lothian is moving to sending letters electronically. This means you can view your administration letters on your mobile phone, tablet or computer. Please note that this method of communication is currently unavailable for General Practice appointments at South Queensferry Medical Practice.

Why we are changing

Every month across NHS Lothian, a high volume of letters is sent by post. Moving to sending administration letters electronically where possible helps to:

  • Reach patients quicker
  • Reduce administrative costs
  • Decrease environmental impact

What letters are included

Administration letters sent electronically include:

  • Outpatient appointment letters
  • Cancellation letters
  • Add to waiting list letters
  • Rescheduled appointment letters

How it works

If you have a mobile phone, you do not need to wait for your administration letter to arrive in the post.

  1. You will receive a text notification asking you to log into a secure portal.
  2. Log in using the unique personal identification number (PIN) provided in the text message alongside your date of birth.
  3. View your letter instantly on your mobile phone, tablet or computer.

Please make sure you read these letters and take action if needed.

Receiving paper letters

You will continue to receive paper letters through the post if:

  • You do not have a mobile phone
  • You have not provided your mobile phone number
  • You do not open the electronic letter within 48 hours of receiving the text notification
