Vaccinations

This guide can help you understand the vaccines offered in Scotland and when to have them. It also explains how they work and why they’re safe and important. For most routine vaccinations, NHS Lothian will invite you by sending you a letter when you become eligible. You do not need to contact them nor your practice to arrange your vaccinations.

Different vaccines are given at different ages to protect you and your child. Find out when these vaccinations are offered, and when and where they’ll be given.

If you’re planning to travel outside the UK, your travel health needs will depend on your individual situation. This service is no longer provided by the practice, and is now the responsibility of the NHS health board where you live.

  • Please arrange a travel health assessment at least 8 weeks before you travel. This gives any vaccines you may need time to work.
  • We do not prescribe sedating medicines for fear of flying. Please see our Medication Policies for more information.
  • We do not provide Fit to Fly certificates or forms, or confirm that you are fit to travel.
  • If you are pregnant and need advice or documentation about flying or travelling, please speak to your midwife. They can advise you about your suitability to travel.

Vaccinations help protect you and your family from many infectious diseases. You’ll be offered different routine vaccinations at different times, depending on your age and circumstances.
