What is an Advanced Physiotherapy Practitioner?

GP Advanced Physiotherapy Practitioners (APPs) are highly experienced physiotherapists who work in GP practices.

They can assess, diagnose and help manage musculoskeletal (MSK) problems.

These are problems affecting your:

• Bones
• Joints
• Muscles
• Ligaments
• Tendons

How can an APP help me?

An APP can:

• Assess your problem and explain what may be causing it
• Give you advice about managing your symptoms
• Refer you for physiotherapy and rehabilitation if needed
• Arrange investigations, such as an X-ray
• Refer you to hospital services, such as orthopaedics, when appropriate
• Provide a fit note as part of your treatment

Some APPs can also provide corticosteroid injections or prescribe medication when appropriate.
