Can I see the GP or Nurse on my own?

Young People and Confidentiality

Taking the first step to speak with a healthcare professional can feel like a big deal, especially when you are navigating health concerns on your own for the first time. Whether you have a specific worry or just need some advice, our team is here to provide a safe, supportive, and non-judgmental space. We understand that talking about your health can sometimes be tricky, and we are committed to listening to you and treating your concerns with the respect and privacy you deserve.

Your Right to Privacy

You do not have to be an adult to see a doctor or nurse by yourself. There is no lower age limit for booking an appointment, and our reception team can arrange a time for you to speak with us without a parent or guardian present if that is what you prefer.

Even if you choose to bring a friend, parent, or carer along for support, you are always welcome to ask for a bit of time to speak with the clinician alone for part of your consultation.

Consent and Decisions

The rules regarding consent in Scotland are designed to protect your right to make decisions about your own body:

  • Aged 16 and over: You are legally entitled to consent to your own medical treatment. This is your decision, and it can only be overruled in very exceptional circumstances.
  • Under 16: You can still make your own decisions and consent to treatment if the doctor or nurse feels you have a clear understanding of the treatment involved and what it means for you. This is often referred to as being “Gillick competent.”

Confidentiality

Everything you discuss with us is confidential. This means we won’t tell your parents, teachers, or anyone else that you have been to see us or what we talked about, unless we are worried that you or someone else is at serious risk of harm. We would always try to talk to you first if we ever needed to share information.
